Major Breakthrough In Intelligent Traffic Technology

In 2022, WildFaces Technology Limited applied to STF (Application Number: CS/02/2107/RA) and was provided with a grant to develop an enhanced technology for predicting congestion in urban areas. Traditionally incident management was performed on fixed cameras on the road. This was costly as even a small stretch of road required a large number of cameras which also meant additional associated costs for computing and for the network.

As part of the project WildFaces developed a new AI (Artificial Intelligence) based Traffic Management system that could work with moving PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) cameras. The ability to use moving cameras significantly reduces the number of cameras required to cover a stretch of road greatly reducing the cost of implementing such traffic incident management systems. This has never been done before anywhere in the world.

Breakthrough AI Technology

A unique feature of the technology developed by WildFaces was that its AI systems did not require any Deep Learning which is required by virtually all current AI systems.

A second breakthrough was the development of the capability to determine the exact location of vehicles on the road. Traditional GPS (Global Positioning Systems) can establish the location of an object with an accuracy of approximately plus or minus 10m outdoor when there is a clear sky and much less under less favourable conditions. With this new system the location of objects can be determined with an accuracy of less than 1 square meter even in adverse weather conditions.

These breakthroughs have resulted in a short-term patent granted in Hong Kong (Patent No. HK30101307).

Autonomous Response

The purpose of the system is to understand the causes of traffic disruption so that these can be pre-empted and mitigated. It can detect sudden slow down; vehicle volume; vehicle classes; illegal parking; working with moving cameras which can be a precursor of congestion.

Such information will be marked on an interactive map with comprehensive reporting to notify the responders.

Benefits to Hong Kong

The technological breakthrough will, of course, help various entities such as building developments, construction sites, logistic centres, and transportation hubs to improve the efficiency with which they manage their roads.

However, it also helps position Hong Kong as a major hub for advanced AI technology development on the world stage.

As part of the project, WildFaces was able to train a large number of local software developers in advanced AI techniques contributing to the growth of skills and opportunities within the territory.

About WildFaces:

WildFaces’ patented “On-The-Move” Artificial Intelligence (AI) based analytics system, WildAI, provides video, sound and smell analytics from moving sensors/ cameras on drones, moving robots and body-worn cameras. Such systems have been implemented on numerous government and commercial sites worldwide.

Applications range from anonymized tracking (with privacy protection) and traffic congestion management to sound and smell analytics.

WildAI requires minimal training, is computing light (does not require GPUs) and can be deployed very quickly. It:

  • Operates in real-time even when the sensor is “On-the-move”.
  • Requires little data training – no labelling, no deep learning
  • Is infrastructure light – fewer cameras required
  • Is computation light
